"Looking Forward" Artist Statement

My primary focus has been on the perception of difference between people and peoples. From the history of the segregated south from times of slavery through the present, to the situation that remains at the cusp of revolution and war between the Israelis and Palestinians, and the greater the clash between western and Arab cultures. Over the last ten years I have personalized more and more the lines that have been drawn between differences, being both the bigot and the target of bigotry. The figurative work that I’m making now encompasses hundreds of figures, all deliberately different, though roughly the same. Despite their color or stature, they remain very elemental to the success of the work being complete; without one, there is a very discernable gap which I think is important to recognize.

I don’t feel that all men are created equal; in fact, I don’t think any two individuals on this earth are created equal, but I feel with all my being, that their presence is vital to the understanding of ourselves collectively. I feel that we should both enjoy and embrace our differences. Shape, color, size, gender, religion, culture, class, nationality; it means relatively nothing in terms of our necessities. That being the case, I feel that it is only fitting to include the landscape into the context of the viewing, as it is timeless and will endure with or without us. The landscape is the place I find myself most comfortably alone and at peace.

I strive to create beauty in both the landscapes and in the figures; one, complimenting the other, so that everyone may walk away with more peace in their heart. I think, and I feel that I am simply a better person by trying to convey this message. I hope it’s contagious.
