March - Green Open Call

In celebration of our new gallery, Artist Alley, we put together an open call for artwork with the theme "Green." Whether it be the color green, a piece that is environmentally friendly, or something new and fresh, green had to be a part of the artists' work. We had approximately 25 artists bring us "green" work. We also had students from Caledonia Elementary's art club bring us masks that they had made out of paper mache. Teacher and sponsor Alika Logan explains more about the masks: "Caledonia Elementary has an afterschool Art Club that meets once a month from 1:15-3:15 on early release Wednesdays. This first year club is made up of 4th and 5th grade students. The goal of the Art club is to expose students to types of art, media, and production they normally would not receive during regular school hours. Student projects this year have consisted of Paper Mache African Masks, Japanese Marbling (Suminagashi), Clay Coil Pots/Bowls, Weaving, and Group Circle Paintings. The club sponsor is Alika Logan, CES Art Teacher. Students researched African Mask designs and their history before designing their masks. Students built paper mache molds using recycled newspapers. Claycrete was used for facial features and details. They painted the masks using Acrylic paint. Some students chose to stay true to the traditional designs, while others experimented with more playful motifs."
