COLUMBUS ARTS COUNCIL PRESENTS CROSSROADS ART ALLIANCE OF GORDO ALAMBA EXHIBIT OPENING

Columbus, MS, August 2, 2012 – The Columbus Arts Council will host a gallery opening and reception featuring artists from Crossroads Art Alliance of Gordo, Alabama. The exhibit will be showcased through the month of August.

The Crossroads Art Alliance is an eclectic and multi-generational group of artists who live and work in Gordo, Alabama (population 1,600). Many people are surprised to learn of the number of artists working in and around Pickens County, Alabama. The Crossroads Arts Alliance of the Town of Gordo is the central organization for this group of eclectic and multi-generational artists and craftspeople. Their work represents a range of art and artistic craft, from photography to letterpress printing; metal work; painting; bookbinding; ceramics and mosaics.

The artists are actively dedicated to Gordo’s growth as a center for art. Their mission is to increase art awareness and education in Pickens County, while enhancing positive partnerships, economic development and cultural development. They run an Art Alley at the Annual Mule Day at Chicken Fest during the first weekend in June, and organize Art Nights in the spring and fall of each year where people can visit their studios and see their work. Lucile ‘Ma’Cile’ House and her Museum of Miscellanea helped make Gordo, Alabama the center for arts and creativity that it is today. Her work and legacy is the inspiration for many of the Crossroads artists.

Artists included in the exhibit: Ashleigh McCool, Barbara Lee Black, Ed Eychner, Kathleen Fetters, Suzanne Gray, Rhys Greene, Sharon Greenwood, Emilie Guyton, Melba Hollingsworth, Glenn House Sr., Sandee House, Lisa Livingston, Missy Miles, Barbara Pennington, Jessica Peterson, Lisa Stamps, and Sherri Warner.

On Thursday, August 2, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., the Columbus Arts Council will host a gallery opening with light refreshments. Admission is free and open to the public.
