The Crossroads Arts Alliance is an eclectic and multi-generational group of artists who live and work in Gordo, Alabama (population 1,600.) Our work represents a wide range of craft methods including photography, ceramics, letterpress printing, metal work and moasics. We are actively dedicated to Gordo's growth as a center for art. Our mission is to increase art awareneww and education in Pickens County, while enhancing positive partnerships, economic development and cultural tourism. Artists in the exhibition include Barbara Lee Black, Kathleen Fetters, Suzanne Gray, Rhys Greene, Melba Hollingsworth, Glenn House, Sr., Butch House, Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., Jessica Peterson, and Lisa Stamps.
Barbara Lee Black is a photographer and the recipient of the Alabama State Council of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship. She operates a studio/gallery in a rehabillitated building on Main Street in Gordo. Black is an MFA student at the University of Alabama and her current work is on display in her gallery.
Kathleen Fetters, co-chair for the CAA, creates black and white silver gelatin photographs which are hand-colored with oils and pigment, as well as inkjet photgraphs, many of which are also hand-colored. She is a recipient of the Alabama State Council of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship and has shown her work at many festivals and competitive shows, winning numerous awards. Her work is available at the Kentuck Museum Gallery in Northport, Alabama, Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, North Carolina, and Art on Broad, Augusta, Georgia. She owns and operates Studio 121 in downtown Gordo in a building restord with her husband, Glenn House, Sr.
Suzanne Gray is a mixed medium artist. Currently her mixed-media painting is shown at Studio 121 in Gordo and at Kentuck Gallery in Northport, AL. A resident artist in Gordo, she is active in all community art projects. She was the art designer for the recent Black Belt Arts Initiative Grant "Bloom Where You Are Planted" mosaic bench project. Suzanne has conducted art classes in cartooning for the Gordo Elementary School and has been the designer of the wonderful Mule Day/Chickenfest t-shirts for the past two years.
Rhys Greene, mosaic artist and photographer, works from her studio in rural Pickens County. Her latest mosaic projects include the "Bloom Where You Are Planted" bench project and the "100 Lenses" project, which can be seen along Main Street in Gordo. Her photographs and mosaic work can also be seen at the new DCH Cancer Treatment Center in Tuscaloosa, The Kentuck Gallery and Courtyard in Northport, AL, St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Fayette, AL, and Camp McDowell, Nauvoo, AL.
Melba Hollingsworth, a retiree from Tuscaloosa High School as art teacher, produces ceramic sculpture and two-dimensional art. She currently serves as both the Gordo Elementary School visual artist resident and librarian for the town of Gordo.
Glenn House, Sr., co-chair of CAA, retired after 13 years as a commercia artist in Tuscaloosa as 23 years at the University of Alabama, where he developed and directed the acclaimed Book Arts Program. House is perhaps best known for designing Tuscaloosa's famous MoonWinx sign.
Butch House is a self-taught welder, producing colorful metal pieces which you can find in front of the Fetter-House Studios in downtown Gordo.
Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is a humble Negro printer from Alabama.
Jessica Peterson is a letterpress printer, papermaker and book artist. She has taught workshops at book arts centers around the country and has been an adjunct faculty member at The University of Alabama, Purchase College and The University of Bridgeport. She is currently an instructor at the Mississippi University for Women.
Lisa Stamps, a former teacher and current administrator, is an arts advocate in the schools. She has had a passion for photography all her life. Her photography mainly features landscapes and people. Also a lover of quilting from an early age, she has produced many themed quilts. She displays some of her work in the school at Gordo and has shown quilts and photography in many shows.
