Grace Atkinson Buchanan's love of art was inspired by several generations of artists in her family and by childhood visits to the studio of noted Mississippi artist, Marie A. Hull. She also remembers observing artists painting in Plein Air at nearby Allison's Wells.
After graduating from Ole Miss, having majored in Southern Literature, the Classics, and Art History, she began her painting journey. Buchanan found she especially was drawn to Plein Air work and found great local and regional instruction.
Study continued with many of the most recognized oil painters in America, and Buchanan became confident in her own style. "Art is my passion and is a never ending
learning and growing process," she says. "I wouldn't want it any other way really, the excitement is in the discovery."
Buchanan has been featured in publications, exhibited in local and regional shows and galleriers, and has taught workshops around Mississippi.
Whether painting well known lanmarks and subjects locally, or far from home, she wants to "capture the beauty of the atmosphere and light as it affects objects, in oils."
Buchanan is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Women Painters of the Southeast, Plein Air Painters of Mississippi, The Outsides; Plein Air Collective, and is a founding member of the Mississippi Oil Painters Association.
Her works may also be seen online at Souther Breeze Gallery in Ridgeland.
Grace Buchanan was named an Honored Artist in 2014 by the Mississippi Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA.)
